Wildfire risk alert: Key regulations for Virginia's 4 p.m. burn law
February 15, 2026
To help prevent wildfires during the high-risk spring season, Virginia's annual 4 PM Burn Law is active from February 15 through April 30.
Please review the following regulations to keep Dickenson County safe:
- No Burning Before 4:00 PM: Open-air burning is strictly prohibited before 4:00 PM if the fire is within 300 feet of woods, brush, or dry grass.
- Allowed Timeframe: Burning is only permitted between 4:00 PM and midnight during this period.
- Fire Attendance: All fires must be attended at all times. You must have water or tools readily available to extinguish the fire.
- Your Responsibility: The person who starts the fire is legally responsible if it escapes, which can lead to fines and criminal charges.
- What is Covered: This law applies to debris burning, brush piles, and most uncontained outdoor fires.
- Exemptions: Charcoal or gas grills are generally permitted.
Spring conditions—including dry weather and higher winds—allow fires to spread rapidly. Your cooperation in following the law and exercising extreme caution is essential for wildfire prevention.
If you have questions about local burn regulations, please contact your local fire department or the Virginia Department of Forestry.
Stay safe, and thank you for helping us prevent wildfires!
