    Pound’s Nannie Beverly celebrated her 100th birthday Feb. 13 at home with surviving daughters Lorene, Loretta and Helen and son-in-law Kenny. Born in 1923 to Patton and Emma Collins, Beverly raised 10 children, seven of whom have passed away. Family members used social media to request 100 birthday cards for Beverly, who received 96 cards from all over the nation. Also, throughout her birthday week she received visits from family, friends and a special surprise visit from the county’s sheriff’s department.  SUBMITTED PHOTO

    More than 100 educators came out to celebrate excellence in education at the 39th annual Forum on Education Thursday night at UVA Wise. From left, UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry, William P. Kanto Memorial Award winner Vickie Ratliff, William J. “Bill” Kanto Jr. and MECC President Kristen Westover were among those in attendance. Ratliff is the former MECC vice president of academic affairs and workforce solutions who retired in 2021.
