CHRISTINE KOHR
November 07, 2024
Christine Stanley Rose Kohr, passed away November 3, 2024, at age 104, at The Laurels, Norton, VA.
Christine was born in the coalfields of Virginia to her now deceased parents, Monroe and Laura Caudill Stanley. She was predeceased in death by her son, Garrison Dale Rose and her brothers Clyde Stanley, Cline Stanley, William Stanley and Anthony Stanley. Her first husband, Ernest Beuford Rose, passed away in 1948 leaving Christine with four children ages nine and under to raise. Later, Christine climbed onto the same school bus as her little boys to attend Dickenson County Memorial High School where she completed her high school degree in three years. She then attended Emory and Henry College where she received a teaching degree in three years and was a member of Kappa Delta Epsilon and Pi Gamma Mu. Christine attended William and Mary College for further studies in Latin. She taught English, history, social studies, geography and Latin at Damascus High School, Clintwood High School, and John Battle High School, all in Southwest Virginia, and at Godwin Middle in northern Virginia.
Upon retirement, Christine moved to Lebanon, PA, with her second husband, Norman W. Kohr (deceased 2006). She served several years as Lebanon County Democratic Party Chair, served at St. Stephens Church of Christ in Lebanon in several capacities and volunteered at the Veterans Administration Hospital primarily mending clothes. Christine missed her mountain home and moved to Abingdon, VA, along with her husband in 2000. While there she joined Abingdon Baptist Church.
Christine’s students remember the respect she gave them and the ability to make them to like even Latin. Being an avid reader, a pragmatist and a forward thinker endeared Christine to all those who met her. Christine’s mantra in life was to use one’s intellect to make good decisions, to learn from one’s mistakes, and to believe in the good to come! In 2014, after breast cancer and moving to assisted living at The Laurels in Norton, Virginia, Christine saw this move as another new beginning in her life.
