DOROTHY POWERS

After 93 years, Dorothy J. Powers passed away on Friday, June 15, 2023.

During her long life, Dorothy was a wife, mother, widow, grandmother and great grandmother.

She attended Hiwassee College as well as Emory and Henry College. During her 42 year career in education, Dorothy was able to earn her Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia. She began her career teaching high school English at Coeburn High School and ended in first grade at J.W. Adams Combined School.

After retirement, Dorothy stayed active in the community. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators, a member of the Fortnightly Club, a member of Gladeville Chapter #171 OES and was also a Kentucky Colonel. Her most important membership was her church, Christ Lutheran Church. She looked upon her fellow members as her family.

Dorothy outlived her husband, son and siblings. She leaves behind a daughter, Susan Powers; her grandchildren, Thomas Belcher and Laura Belcher and two great grandchildren, Robert Chappell and George Chappell.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, June 26, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church 113 West Main St. Wise, VA with Michael Samerdyke officiating. A reception will follow.
