When little trains made big trains

The first “radio train” on the Appalachia Division operated successfully on January 2, 1966. Interstate general manager Tom Gurley has stepped out of the lead unit to wave to a couple of photographers. This location was known as “Harvey Road Crossing.” In the early 70s the dangerous crossing with US 23 was replaced with two overhead bridges, later named for veteran Big Stone Gap photographer George Dalton, who was a constant advocate for a grade separation at the treacherous crossing.
