Both Raiders and Spartans see wrestlers moving on to state
While Grundy took the team title in a big way, several individual wrestlers from J.I. Burton and Eastside made their presence felt during the Region 1D wrestling competition at Rural Retreat High School on Thursday.
The Spartans came in seventh overall with a score of 56 points while the Raiders posted a ninth place finish at 30 points.
Freshman Nick Ward of Eastside (9-8) finished in fourth place after being pinned at 1:34 at 138 pounds.
At 145 pounds, Holden Hutchinson of J.I. Burton pinned Chance Jewell of Honaker at 2:27 to take third place.
Eastside’s Colton Kline (18-8) finished in second place at 170 pounds after being pinned at :53.
Raider freshman Michael Carver (19-7) defeated Lebanon’s Hunter Sykes by fall at 1:49 to finish third at 182 pounds.
Spartan freshman Mason McCoy (6-13) dropped a 4-1 decision in the third place match to finish fourth overall at 195 pounds.
Zack Ward (18-5) of Eastside finished second overall after being pinned at 2:27 in the heavyweight championship match.
All wrestlers who finished in third place or higher will attend the state wrestling meet at February 18 and 19 at Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.
