UVA Wise 2021 tennis tournament set for Sept 2-5

Sponsored by The Coalfield Progress, Impressions of Wise, Inc., and UVA Wise, The UVA Wise tennis teams will be holding their annual Tennis Tournament from Sept. 2nd to Sept. 5 at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. This year, the tournament will be dedicated to the memory of beloved assistant tennis coach Gary Adams, who was part of the UVA Wise tennis coaching staff for eight seasons.

'"This is our way of keeping his memory alive," UVA Wise tennis coach and tournament director Danny Rowland said. "Most people attending this tournament each year had crossed paths with Gary, and this is a great way to honor him."

The tournament will include singles and doubles events for high-school age players as well as adult participants. Participants will be categorized by men's and women's A and B, high-school level, and men's and women's age 50 and over. Participants will be required to follow all USTA guidelines and regulations, and are asked to bring a can of USTA-approved tennis balls to their respective match.

Entry will be $15 per person, which includes cost of entry and a t-shirt provided by Impressions of Wise, Inc. All proceeds from this event will go towards the UVA Wise men's and women's tennis programs.

The Railroad Days 5K is back for 2021

Railroad Days has returned and brought with it their annual 5K race which includes: a 5K, a three-mile power walk and a one-mile fun walk on Saturday, August 7.

The cost during pre-registration is $14 for the 5K run and $10 for the power walk or fun walk. On race day, the cost for the 5K is $15 and the walks are $11. The 5K begins at 8 a.m. followed by the power walk and the fun walk.

Awards will be provided based on age groups as well as overall awards to individual winners of the 5K.

Bike race on High Knob announced

The inaugural Gravelachia Bike Race will be held Saturday, August 7 at 8 a.m.

The race will travel primarily graveled forest roads on High Knob and will feature: 35- and 90-mile routes, 5,000’ and 13,000’ elevation gains, five categorized climbs and a 70/30 gravel to road split.

Volunteers to help with the race are also being sought. Both the 35- and 90-mile race are $45. All riders will receive finisher awards and a t-shirt. There will be fully stocked support and aid stations along the way.
