Local One Act students shine in district competitions

April 22, 2021

One Act Theatre is an area where local schools have consistently shown strength over the years with many outstanding performances. 2021 has proven to be a challenge for these teams. They have dealt with many issues such as social distancing due to Covid-19 restrictions and a virtual platform for competition that included the need to record their individual shows on video in order to submit them for judging.  Normally a Fall event, One Act was moved to Spring for the 2020-2021 school year.

In Section 1D1 competition, Eastside High School won the District Title earlier this month with their performance of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” Castlewood High School finished second.  Outstanding Actor Awards were won by Olivia Adkins, Sarah Burke, Malik Jallow and Hadassah White.

In Section 2D2 Mountain 7 competition, Central High School claimed the District Title with their play “When She Had Wings.” Union High School finished second. Awards for Outstanding Actors were earned by Maria Boggs, Emma Stallard and Draak Sutphin of Central High School. At Union High School, Bailey Lantman and Shelby Peace also won Outstanding Actor Awards.

All four schools advance to their regional competitions, with recordings due by April 24th. Once judging is completed, these schools will know if they have achieved the opportunity to compete for the VHSL State Championship in their respective divisions.

Congratulations to the coaches and teams from each school.
