JOHN DOUGLAS BOLLING SR.

September 03, 2020

John Douglas Bolling Sr., 86, of Pound, entered peacefully into eternity Sunday August 30, 2020 after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Doug was a Christian of the Methodist faith. He was a retired surface miner with over 40 years of experience. Doug was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America. He believed in working to provide for his family. Doug believed in giving back to his community as well. He was a member of the Pound Rescue Squad for 39 years, going on countless calls at all hours of the day or night. He was also a member of the Pound Lions Club for 57 years.

Doug was an honest and dependable man, if he told you something you could count it. He was also quick to voice his opinion whether you agreed with him or not. Doug always enjoyed raising a garden, he would “go by the signs” and always grew plenty, most of which he gave away. He could be a bear at times, but underneath he was really a kind hearted soul. He is finally at peace now that he is reunited with the love of his life, his beloved Ila.

Doug was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Ila Bolling; his parents John Tildon and Mary (Sturgill) Bolling Haynes; sisters Vergie Sumpter, Winnie Phillips, Viva Sturgill, Gertrude Short, Ruby Sparks, Bethel Stewart and Marie Combs; and a brother, Wayne Bolling.

Survivors include his son John Douglas Bolling Jr. of Pound; grandsons, Tylor Bolling and wife Michelle of Abingdon and Austin Bolling and wife Kasey of Pound; great-grandchildren, Kolten Bolling, Kinslee Bolling, Harper Rose, Parker Rose and one on the way Ryker Bolling; sisters Bernice Burke and husband Ronald of Radford and Brenda Mangum of Pound; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and host of friends and loved ones. The family would like to give a special thanks Dr. Nida, Dr. Wendy Abbott, Latisha Franks NP, and the staff of Lonesome Pine hospital for the medical care and compassion they gave and also his care givers, Phyllis Stapleton and Sammy Carter and special longtime friend, Shirley Collins.

Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday September 2 in the Baker Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Randy Carter and Reverend Troy Belcher officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until time of services.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 3 at the Bolling Cemetery in the Flat Gap Section of Pound where family and friends and members of the Pound Rescue Squad served as pallbearers. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10 a.m. to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pound Rescue Squad at P O Box 711 Pound, VA 24279
