ROSCOE MULLINS

Roscoe Mullins, age 93, of Clintwood, departed this life on Tuesday November 23, 2021 surrounded by his family at his side at his home near Clintwood.

The last surviving son of James Russell and Delphia Ratliff Mullins, Roscoe was born on November 2, 1928 on Tempest Branch in Dickenson County.

He was a 1946 graduate of Dickenson Memorial and Industrial High School, military veteran serving in the United States Air Force, stateside during the Korean War, as a RB-47 aircraft /flight-line mechanic.

During his enlistment in the Air Force, he traveled to Alaska for temporary duty and fell in love with the Alaskan wilderness and always wanted to travel back to Alaska, just one more time.

He was a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company, a division of the Pittston Coal Group, where he worked as an above ground mechanic for nearly forty-five years before an accident forced him to retire from the coal industry. Roscoe was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. In his time before and after retirement, he was a master craftsman working in wood and his mechanical knowledge was sought after by many to help solve their mechanical or engine problems with automobiles and equipment.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Agnes Hughes Mullins, with whom he was married to for 57 years, beginning on August 7, 1948. Upon her illness in 2003, he provided exceptional care and love to “Aggie” as her caregiver until her passing in 2007. Preceding Roscoe in death were his parents; brothers, Houston, Haskel, Chester, Ulis, and Leslie Mullins, and sisters, Arlene, Lois and Eunice Mullins.

Surviving are his only son, Roderick Allen and wife Kimberly Mullins of Wise; his only grandson, Andrew Russell and wife Andrea Mullins also of Wise and his only great-grandchild and the bright spot in his life, Afton Elizabeth Mullins, also of Wise. He is also survived by his sister, Norma Robinson of Clintwood; a sister in-law, Lucille Dotson Mullins of Clintwood, several nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends.

Visitation took place Sunday, November 28 starting at 1 p.m. with a celebration of life service for Roscoe Mullins beginning at 2 p.m. in the Clintwood-Colley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lynn Vanover officiating. Entombment was held following the service at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery in Clintwood. Pallbearers were Andrew Mullins, Elmer Mullins, Alan Mullins, Daniel Robinson, Mark Robinson, Bob Priest, Thomas Sorrels, and Brandon Moore. Honorary pallbearers were Bobby McClellan, Roy Fleming, Jr., Larry Compton, Ron Compton and Skylar Allen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in honor of Roscoe Mullins to the Dickenson County Food Bank.
