MURIEL ELIZABETH CANTRELL

Mrs. Muriel Elizabeth Cantrell, 96, of Pound, went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday October 5, 2021 from her sons home in Jasper. 

Muriel was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She was baptized  at the age of 19 and loved her Lord. She taught Sunday School  at the Indian Creek Freewill Baptist Church and loved quilting  there.

She was a loving and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was proud of her family and had every right to be. She and Newton successfully raised four rowdy boys all of whom turned out quite well. Muriel graduated high school and was a lifelong reader. She loved school and was a member of the girls basketball team. She enjoyed cooking and caring for her family and friends, camping and fishing.

Muriel was a true lady, very modest and humble. 

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years Newton Cantrell; her parents Charles Alverse and Clara (Adkins) Baker; sisters Violet Clark and Emogene Carter; brother Kenneth Baker; and daughter-in-law Libby Cantrell.

Survivors include her sons Denny Cantrell-Pound, Gerald Cantrell and wife Sheila-Jasper, Randall Cantrell-Big Stone Gap and Stacy Cantrell-Pound; four grandchildren David Cantrell (Felicia)-Pound, Wendy Jordan (Robbie)-Pound, Dakota Cantrell (Jodie)-Pound and Colt Cantrell-Big Stone Gap; a great-grandson Daniel Jordan-Pound; a great-great grandson Ezekiel Michael Jordan; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.

Funeral services were conducted at 7:00 pm Thursday, October 7 in the Baker Funeral Home chapel with Elder Stacy Potter officiating. The family received friends from 6:00 pm until time of services.

Graveside services will be conducted at noon Friday, October 8 at the Baker Cemetery on Bean Gap Road – Pound, where sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Family and friends are asked to meet at Baker Funeral Home by 11:00 am to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donation be made to the Pound Rescue Squad at P O Box 711 Pound, VA 24279.
