September 21, 2021

Norton schools are seeing COVID-19 cases, mainly among younger students.

The school board received a report last week.

Norton Elementary and Middle School had 11 positive cases of the virus between Aug. 4 and Aug. 27. J. I. Burton High School had only two cases in the same timeframe. Between Aug. 30 and Sept. 10, however, there were six positive cases at Burton and five at NEMS.

There was also a high number of students in quarantine. In August, there were 38 NEMS students and five Burton students quarantined. There are 28 NEMS students and nine Burton students reported quarantined in September so far.

For both August and September and for both schools, there have been eight reported cases of COVID-19 among teachers.

On the district’s website, a link for mitigation strategies redirects to the state website with protocol for schools. Social distancing when possible and masks are required indoors and on buses. Norton schools are not currently doing temperature checks.
